Students choose from three distinct but overlapping majors – chemistry, biology, or health sciences. While the study of biology explores all living organisms in order to answer the question what is life,” chemistry strives to explain the world through the study of matter and its properties. Both chemistry and biology are key components of the health sciences program. The American Chemical Society-accredited B.S. degree in Chemistry has a foundation in mathematics and physics, with rigorous training in five major sub-disciplines: Analytical, Biochemistry, Inorganic, Organic, and Physical Chemistry. Extensive laboratory experience, exciting coursework, and opportunities of undergraduate research help students develop the technical skills required to innovate in their field. Chemistry Program offers two Specializations: Biochemistry Specialization is designed for chemistry majors interested in the application of chemistry concepts to biological systems; Green Chemistry Specialization offers in-depth knowledge to chemistry majors who are interested in a career related to green and sustainable technologies. The B.S. degree in Biology offers rigorously trained in Biological Sciences, including microbiology, genetics, and cell and molecular biology. Students also acquire a solid foundation in mathematics, chemistry, and biochemistry. Biology undergraduates will focus in one of several areas of emphasis, including pre-med, biochemistry and molecular biology, pre-biomedical, and environmental science. The degree prepares them for graduate school or careers in the health sciences, industry, and government. The B.S. degree in Pre-Professional Health Sciences prepares students interested in a career in healthcare for admission into a variety of graduate and professional programs including medical and dental schools, physical and occupational therapy programs, physician assistant, chiropractic, optometry, and radiography programs. This flexible science degree requires core courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and math, allows multidisciplinary electives and support courses from other areas such as psychology and humanities, and tailors the curriculum to specific healthcare career interests of the students. Our Department Vision is to prepare world-class leaders in chemistry, biology, and health sciences toward a sustainable and prosperous future. Our Department Mission is to foster the next generation of scientists with a solid foundational knowledge in chemistry and biology, intellectual and technical skills for successful careers in science and technology, and conscious minds to engage in global and societal challenges. Our high-quality undergraduate programs maintain a low student-per-faculty ratio, enabling both active in-class instruction and extensive hands-on” laboratory skills. The department provides abundant opportunities for undergraduate research experience. All three undergraduate degrees prepare students for a wide range of exciting careers or professional programs, from biomedicine, policy and law, health care, medical school, physical therapy programs, and more All three undergraduate degrees prepare students for a wide range of exciting careers or professional programs, from biomedicine, policy and law, health care, medical school, physical therapy programs, and more.
